The horror comedy Stree 2 starring Shraddha Kapoor and Rajkummar Rao is already shattering records on its first day of release. The picture, which opened in theaters on August 15, is off to a strong start at the box office, ranking among the highest advance bookings of all time.

A day before its all-India release on Thursday, Stree 2 hosted select paid previews beginning at 9.30 p.m., which received a strong reaction, setting a new box office record. The horror comedy beat Shah Ruk Khan’s Chennai Express’s long-standing paid preview record, which stood at Rs 6.75 crore nett in 2013. Stree 2 is now the number one picture, generating about Rs 8 crore, according to early trade estimates.

Stree 2 has not only set..

A paid preview benchmark, but it has also surpassed some of the biggest films of all time in terms of advance booking on day one. On August 14, a day before its broad release, Stree 2 sold 3,92,000 tickets (excluding paid previews) across national multiplex networks.

As far as advance booking for day one at national multiplexes is concerned, the film comfortably cruised past biggies like Salman Khan’s Tiger 3, Ranbir Kapoor’s Brahmastra and Aamir Khan’s Thugs of Hindostan.

In terms of advance booking ranking, Stree 2 is seventh on the list, behind films like Baahubali 2 Hindi (6,50,000 tickets), Jawan (5,57,000), Pathaan (5,56,000), KGF 2 Hindi (5,15,000), Animal (4,60,000) and War (4,10,000).

When it comes to the overall advance bookings, Stree 2 is on a rampage, selling 8,24, 483 tickets in single screens and multiplexes. The gross collection for the same stands at a whopping Rs 23.36 cr, as reported by Sacnilk.

What distinguishes Stree 2’s total

dominance at the box office is that it did so in a three-way battle against two other films starring A-list actors. Stree 2 debuted with Akshay Kumar’s comedy Khel Khel Mein and John Abraham’s actioner Vedaa, and both films had a slow start in ticket sales.

Khel Khel Mein sold only 28,000 tickets at national multiplex networks, but overall sales totaled 47,202, for a gross of Rs 1.54 crore. Vedaa likewise performed poorly, with only 22,000 ticket sales in national chains and a total of 61,040. The actioner’s gross ticket sales are Rs 1.49 crore.

The trade expects Stree 2 to start at Rs 40 crore, and with Rs 8 crore already flowing in via paid previews, the total collection on day one could exceed Rs 50 crore. Vedaa and Khel Khel Mein are projected to open between Rs 5-7 crore.
