England Patriots’ preseason ended with a 20-10 loss against the Washington Commanders on Sunday night. Here’s who drew our attention, for better or ill, during live viewing.
Drake Maye, quarterback, emerged victorious. The youngster looked confident and at ease under center Sunday night, despite the fact that the situation around him was actively working against him. Maye had some mistakes of his own, but the rookie directed an 11-play touchdown drive that included a third-and-14 scramble and two downfield conversions under pressure. For the second week in a row, Maye’s best play was one that did not count. In a two-minute drill, the quarterback ran to his left before sending a deep pass to K.J. Osborn for a score that was disallowed by a penalty.
There was a penalty that nullified this TD, but this play is a great window into some of the special traits Drake Maye brings to the table

England Patriots Maye has again demonstrated his ability to raise the talent around him, and he has unquestionably been the greatest quarterback on New England’s roster of late. He may not start Week 1 owing to the circumstances around him (more on that later), but they may be unable to keep him off the field for long.
Loser: Offensive line. New England’s starting front seven had a dreadful and somewhat embarrassing performance, committing eight first-half penalties and allowing multiple pressures and a sack that resulted in Jacoby Brissett injuring his shoulder.

Starting left tackle Chuks Okorafor was called for three (!!!) illegal formation penalties, negating the aforementioned touchdown in the process. Left guard Sidy Sow was called for a hold before leaving with an injury, center Nick Leverett had a pair of bad snaps, right guard Layden Robinson had a false start and contributed on a first drive run stuff, and right tackle Mike Onwenu also got called for an illegal formation. Michael Jordan also was called for a hold filling in for the injured Sow.
Winners: LB Joe Giles-Harris and LB Christian Elliss.Â
The two linebackers entered Sunday perhaps battling for one roster spot after strong summers. They didn’t make the choice easy for their coaches, as Giles-Harris recorded an impressive interception while Elliss led the tram with 11 total tackles — one for a loss. Elliss did leave the game late with a head injury, but New England would likely prefer to keep both players around in some capacity moving forward.
Loser: CB Azizi Hearn.Â
England Patriots cornerbacks coach Mike Pellegrino has praised Hearn this offseason for his improvement, but it was a rough showing from the corner Sunday night. Hearn was called for three defensive pass interferences and gave up a late touchdown to Martavis Bryant to put the game on ice for the Commanders. He also took a shoulder from QB Trace McSorley in the run game.
Honorable mentions:
- In a pair of depth battles, Kevin Harris may have taken RB3 duties with his 18-yard touchdown catch while Jaheim Bell drew a start and showed some juice on a 16-yard catch-and-run that could gain him ground in the TE3 battle.
- On the opposite end of the spectrum, wide receiver Kayshon Boutte did not play until the second half and did not record a reception.
- Terrell Jennings continues to run hard leading the team with 36 rushing yards on six carries. He’d be a great option to return on the practice squad.
- Keion White picked up another preseason sack — this time from the interior.
- UDFA David Wallis continues to be a consistent returner averaging 33 yards per kick return. The practice squad could be in his future.
- In the kicker battle, Chad Ryland made his first preseason field goal attempt from 38 yards while Slye missed both of his kicks, which were both from 60-plus yards.
