World Champion Neeraj improved on his season-best performance in the men’s javelin throw event at the legendary Stade de France on Thursday, winning India’s first silver medal in the 2024 Summer Games. Minutes after India’s ‘Golden Boy’ made history on the biggest platform, Chopra’s mother, Saroj Devi, disclosed that her son overcame an injury to secure a podium place in Paris.

champion and Olympic gold medalist from Tokyo was eliminated from the Paris Olympics qualification phase. Neeraj’s first throw (89.34m) in the Paris Olympics earned him a final ticket and the top rank for India in the men’s javelin qualification round. Two days after dominating the group stage, Neeraj returned to the javelin final as the defending champion. Neeraj only threw one clean throw (89.45m), and the 26-year-old was eliminated in the final.

Neeraj’s solitary successful throw in the Paris Games final earned India its fourth medal. Though Neeraj won his qualification throw, Pakistan’s Arshad Nadeem defeated the defending champion in the final. Neeraj’s mother told ANI that she will prepare Neeraj’s favorite dinner after the javelin star returned from the Olympics. “We are quite happy. For us, silver is equivalent to gold. The person who received the gold resembles our kid. He was injured, so we’re pleased with his performance. “I’ll cook his favorite food,” she added.

Dharm Singh Chopra, Neeraj’s grandfather, stated his grandson did his best aims to increase India’s medal tally at the Paris Games. The Chopra family handed sweets after Neeraj won the silver medal at the Paris Olympics. “He gave his best performance and won silver, adding another medal to the country,” Neeraj’s grandfather said.

Neeraj joins ex-wrestler Sushil Kumar (2008 and 2012) and ace shuttler PV Sindhu (2016 and 2021) as Indians who have won successive Summer Games medals.

Satish Kumar, Neeraj’s father, said that his son was carrying an injury that contributed to his second-place finish in the Olympics. “Everybody has their day. Today was Pakistan Day. But we won silver, which makes us proud. I believe his groin injury played a role in his performance. He won silver for his country. We are pleased and proud. Neeraj’s father concluded that he will inspire all of the youths.

Nadeem from Pakistan outperformed Neeraj to win a historic gold medal for his country at the Paris Games. He won the men’s javelin final with a record-breaking throw of 92.97 metres. Nadeem broke Andreas Thorkildsen’s Olympic record (90.57m), which he set at the 2008 Beijing Olympics. While Nadeem won Pakistan’s first Olympic medal in athletics, Grenada’s Anderson Peters grabbed bronze with a throw of 88.54.
